The problem is that your include file is a complete page with <head> & <body> tags. Include files should only contain the actual code that is needed to be included.

If you are seeing the <br> on your output page, then the odds are that it was added in design view, and therefore UD thinks it is text, and not code.

I would sum it up with ease of coding. Many of the functions that have to be defined on the page in ASP are built into the server, so a simple insert can be done in 4 lines of code.
